Superpowers …

Friday morning Karry asked me to pick out some loose-fitting clothes for her.

A day removed from knee surgery, she was starting to feel a bit more like herself.

Asking for help … isn’t typically among her superpowers.

It felt good to be asked.

“The happiness of being called upon,” as I heard a wise person once describe it.

I picked out some joggers from her dresser, then went over to the closet, which we share.

Her stuff’s on the right, my shit’s on the left, as she likes to refer to it.

The top rack is pretty jam-packed.

I had to back-hand some of my stuff to the side so I could explore the options.

The joggers were grey, so I wanted something … not grey.

Matching … is not among my superpowers.

Wow, I didn’t realize she had so many work t-shirts.

Makes sense, I guess.

I figured a work shirt on the day after knee surgery … proly not a good idea.

It struck me how I go to the closet every day, but have never really paid attention to what hangs on her side.

Flipping through her t-shirts … was like reading an autobiography of sorts.

In all our years together, I’ve never noticed that. I’ve never read Karry’s story that way before.

I began to pick out chapters from the no particular order.

Faith … cats … coffee … Disney.

I noticed that each chapter was made up of a mix of things she had bought for herself as well as gifts from those who reflect her good light back to her.

“I’ll wear what loves me,” as I heard a poet once put it.

“And annoys me,” Karry’s side of the closet would also suggest, as evidenced by the small chapter dedicated to the fact that people are indeed … something.

After perusing the options, I picked out an over-sized, burnt-orange Disney number.

Walked out to the living room and presented my recommendation, pointing out how I prioritized ‘not clashing,’ if not actual, you know, matching.

“Good fall choice,” she confirmed.

I smiled out loud.

After all these years, receiving Karry’s approval still makes me feel good.

I knew it might be the one and only day where she asks for my help … our superpowers not being the heroes of this current chapter.

Which is why I wanted to put it on the page … and hang it here.
