Frozen In Time

Saturday, Oct. 18, 2026

My new favorite sounds
are of the acorns
letting go

free falling
freeing fall
exchanging hi-fives with the leaves

dapping each other up on their way down
landing with such gentle thwumps
how the soft ground receives them

this morning I caught the sun
peeking through the trees
steam rising from the creek

like Sunday morning coffee
I've never seen it do that
I guess God likes to see her breath sometimes, too

warming my cup, my hand, Karry on the porch
acknowledging the season's first frost
encouraging me to look up

just in time to catch a leaf in perfect pirouette
twirling so tightly on the still air
spinning faster than it was falling

I've never seen one do that
how it took forever to fall
just long enough for me to notice

how acorns sound different
striking frozen ground
plunk
